(posted 16.12.09)
An amazing year of musical highs has reached a rewarding crescendo for a group of talented Matthew Flinders Anglican College graduates with six receiving offers to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
Another three students are waiting to hear back where their musical paths are headed after auditioning in Western Australia, New South Wales and New York.
Before the OP results were even released, the musical talents of Lauren Lodge-Campbell (classical/jazz singing), Andrew Wrangell (composition/performance), Matt Thomas (bass trombone), Krist-elle Hill (clarinet), Rebekah Trevor (composition) and Natalie Kitney (viola) were recognised with offers to study at Queensland’s premier music school.
The Queensland Conservatorium is considered the pinnacle of music studies in Queensland and is one of Australia's leading music schools, with a reputation for excellence across a diverse range of specialisations.
Talented saxophonist Jake Barden auditioned at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and missed his Secondary Awards Night to fly to New York to audition at one of the world’s most prestigious performing arts conservatories, the Juilliard School.
Musical theatre stars Joel Paszkowski and Aimee Liesegang have been offered places at the Queensland University of Technology to undertake music studies, and both auditioned at the prestigious Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Joel received a call-back to WAAPA and has also auditioned for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Two past Flinders students, Phil Murray (graduated 2008) and Michael Bakrnchev (2007) have also been offered places to study in 2010 at the Queensland Conservatorium.
In Flinders’ 20th year, it is an incredible feat to have so many students’ musical talents recognised with offers to study at prestigious music schools around the country.
The tertiary offers top off a huge year for the Music Department which included the musical West Side Story, the Sydney Music Tour and performance with the Sydney Street Choir, the David Campbell concert, and the 20th Anniversary Voyage of Celebration Dinner.
All of the 2009 Flinders graduates studied Music and Music Extension as part of their Senior Secondary studies. The students’ talents flourished under the expert guidance of their music mentors – Head of Music Nick Campbell, Band Director John Thomas, “Band Mum” Jenny Thomas and the entire Music Department.
