Flinders students in tune with wildlife
(posted 11.12.09)
Matthew Flinders Anglican College students have made some appreciative feathered and furry friends.
The 2009 Environment Committee, consisting of eager Year 11 and 12 students, has been active this year working in partnerships with different staff and community organisations with a focus on encouraging and educating the community about ways to make a difference to our environment.
Their achievements include the introduction of recycling bins in the Secondary school in partnership with the P&F, who funded them dollar for dollar, a webpage on www.mfac.edu.au, and fortnightly “E-Tips” in the newsletter.
An ongoing project is making bird boxes, which is one way to help protect birds like rosellas and lorikeets, and sugar and squirrel gliders.
Teacher Jane Martens obtained funding for the project from BP and about 30 bird boxes have been made.
Students have taken over the design technology workshop during the afternoons to build them.
The boxes were recently put into trees and the committee also plans to fit out some of the bird boxes with web cameras.
Bird boxes are also for sale at a cost of $35 per box. You will need a ladder, our instructions and some wire and hose—items usually found in most garden sheds, to install a box in your garden.
