Flinders champion netball school for 3rd year running
(posted 09.06.10)
To cap off a stunning netball season, Matthew Flinders Anglican College has taken out the Sunshine Coast Secondary School Netball Competition’s Champion School trophy for the third successive year.
This honour is calculated on the finishing positions of the teams on the points’ ladders after the final round of games. Congratulations to the more than 100 Flinders girls who have played their hearts out every Monday night since February, sometimes in extreme conditions.
With 13 teams, spread across 11 divisions, Flinders was well placed on the points’ ladders at the end of the rounds. Junior A, Junior B and Open B Navy finished top of their divisions, Intermediate A and Intermediate A Reserve finished 2nd, Open C Navy 3rd, and Open A 4th. The Junior C team was unlucky to miss a semi-final berth, relegated to 5th place on a count-back.
Congratulations to the five teams who won their semi-final to progress through to the Grand Finals, held at the Caloundra Indoor Sports Centre on Monday, June 7. For the first time, Flinders was represented in all A grade finals, as well as two B grade finals - a huge achievement.
The Junior B game came down to the wire; St Teresa’s Catholic College 2 was narrowly defeated by Flinders’ courageous attack, superb defence and some audacious shooting from the team. Congratulations to the players and their coach, Mrs Leanne Herriman.
The Junior As, coached by Mrs Jodie McKenzie, won in convincing fashion over St Teresa’s Catholic College 1. While the game was tightly contested for the first half, the Junior A players began to shine after half time to run out convincing winners.
The Intermediate A team, coached by the Sunshine Coast U15 Regional Schoolgirls coach, Vickey Frost, were forceful winners over Siena. This was another tight game until half-time when Flinders started to assert their dominance. A fitting end for an undefeated team!
In the senior divisions, two teams represented Flinders. The Open B Navy, coached by Miss Kathryn Rooke Jones, beat Immanuel Lutheran College Firsts by the slimmest of margins in the final minute of the game. The girls’ accurate shooting and feisty defence resulted in a welcome premiership. Our Firsts (Mrs Jodie McKenzie) endured a very tough match against Caloundra, who ran out eventual winners of the Open A grade.
While the netball season is over for many players, there are two teams who will continue to train as they prepare to represent the school in the coming months. Our Vickey Wilson team, who play in the state-wide competition, will resume training after the holidays in preparation for competition in August.
For only the second time, Flinders is sending a team to the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball competition, held in the middle week of the June/July holidays. This group of Year 9 and 10 students will play against the best netballers in Queensland independent schools in a tough four-day competition. Good luck to team members Naomi Fitzpatrick, Olivia Gore, Josephine Hungerford, Zoe Johnstone, Charlotte Mungomery, Pepe Murrell, Lucy O’Hara, Ashlee Unie, Emily Travers-Jones and Remy Samin.
A big thanks to teacher-in-charge of netball, Katrina Ridley.
Fitzpatrick named in Qld team to contest National Championships
The Sunshine Coast Regional Under 15 Netball Team competed at the Queensland Secondary School Netball Championships at Caloundra from May 27-30.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College had four players in this team: Zoe Johnstone (Yr 10), Josephine Hungerford, Ashlee Unie and Naomi Fitzpatrick (all Yr 9).
Under coach Vickey Frost, who also coaches a Flinders team in Monday night’s Secondary School competition, the team played a fantastic 11 games of netball and finished runners-up after a hard fought final against the South Coast girls.
The Flinders girls put in really solid performances over the weekend and should be extremely proud of their efforts.
Naomi Fitzpatrick, pictured, was successful in being named in the Queensland team to compete at the National Championships to be held in Toowoomba from July 24-30. Naomi was also named as Most Valuable Player for the Sunshine Coast team.
