Chess success for Flinders students.Flinders chess players make right moves to win way to State Champs

(posted 21.09.10)

Two Matthew Flinders Anglican College chess teams have made the right moves to win their way through to the State Championships in both the Primary and Secondary Schools divisions.

Several hundred enthusiast chess students from schools around the Sunshine Coast converged on Lake Kawana Community Centre on August 24 for Round 3 of the Interschools Chess Zone Finals.

Matthew Flinders Anglican College entered seven teams of four students each in three different divisions: Secondary, Primary Premier and A grade. Flinders had students competing from Years 3 to 10. All students played extremely well and exhibited exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship.

Congratulations go to all teams and particularly to the Flinders Secondary team of Michael Jefferies, William Collins, Sri Ram Rajappa and Declan Haigh, who placed first in their division and will now represent the Coast at the State Secondary Championships in October.

Congratulations also to the Primary Premier team of Charles Gore, Max Quirk, Peter McMahon and Kai Jankowaik, who also placed first in their division and will contest the State Primary titles. A special mention to Michael Jefferies, who was undefeated in all seven matches. Well done to everyone who attended - exemplary behaviour, great chess and great spirit!
