Guest appearance by Patrice Tipoki
Matthew Flinders Anglican College will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a New Orleans Gala Concert starring top Australian entertainer David Campbell on July 25.
Musical theatre star and old Flinderian Patrice Tipoki, who is currently appearing in the hit Broadway show Wicked in Melbourne, will also travel to the Sunshine Coast to perform.
The evening of entertainment and celebration will also feature the Matthew Flinders Anglican College Stage Band and Choir. The students will have the opportunity to workshop with Campbell during the day, and then perform on the night with the entertainer and his 10-piece band.
From swing and jazz, to the blue-eyed soul from his most recent album, Good Lovin’, David Campbell is set to wow guests at the “New Orleans Soul Club” to be created in the Flinders Sports Centre.
Campbell is one of the country’s most popular and versatile personalities. His career has seen him take the lead of Johnny O’Keefe in the record-breaking rock ’n’ roll musical Shout in 1999 and star in Channel 7’s hit television show Dancing with the Stars in 2005. More recently his passion for music has come to the fore again with the popular Swing Sessions, and now his Good Lovin’ album released last year.
Good Lovin’ has the up-tempo, positive sense of unlimited possibilities that typified the ’60s. It was the era of the space race, free love, James Bond and blue-eyed soul, and David Campbell and his Good Lovin’ will encourage us to party as if it’s 1968.
His appearance on the Sunshine Coast at the Flinders’ 20th anniversary Gala Concert will showcase an eclectic collection of classics by such greats as the Young Rascals, the Righteous Brothers, the Spencer David Group, Van Morrison, Aaron Neville and Blood Sweat and Tears, not to mention Georgie Fame and the King - Elvis Presley.
In keeping with the intimate New Orleans Soul Club theme of the Flinders’ gala extravaganza, guests are encouraged to bring their friends, make up a table and relax in the lounge areas.
A club bar will be operating with nibbles available. The evening is supported by Mooloolaba-based Murphy Builders Qld.
For more information or to book, telephone 5477 3200. Tickets are $65 per head. Doors open 7.15pm and the show starts at 8pm.
