Matthew Flinders Anglican College students welcomed their grandparents to school on Wednesday, August 18, to show them what happens at school in 2010.
Grandparents young and old travelled from local, interstate and even overseas to share the morning with their grandchildren.
Highlights of the annual event this year
included Year 2 scientists conducting experiments at the Science Fair and the Prep students displaying their artwork in “Our Grandparents’ Gallery”.
Year 3 children showcased an exhibition of Australian landscapes, and Year 4 delved into the theme of “First Australians”.
The Year 5 students presented a Game Maker demonstration of computer technology used in the classroom, and the Year 6 students a “2010 Showcase”.
There was a huge line-up of entertainment in Flinders’ new Primary Pavilion, which was funded by the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution Stimulus Program and opened earlier this year.
Items during the day included a Prep Concert, Year 1 Young McDonald’s Farm, Year 3 Recorders Presentation, Year 4 Poetry Finals and Strings Presentation, Year 5 Singing Presentation, and a medley from the Year 6 musical, Alice in Wonderland.
The Junior Primary Choir and the String Ensemble performed for grandparents, and the finale of the morning was a concert led by the Flinders Band,
Orchestra and Choir.
The hotly contested Year 6 and 7 Oratory competitions were held in the Drama Theatre and Lecture Theatre, and the Primary Library, Computer Lab and Art Room were also open for students to show their
grandparents how and what they learn in 2010.
Head of Primary Bruce Winther said Grandparents Day provided the opportunity for families to share a special day at school.
“Grandparents make a unique and precious contribution to children’s lives and at Flinders we are committed to encouraging this involvement on all levels,” Mr Winther said.
