Flinders takes Champion crown on Grand Final Day
The Sunshine Coast Hockey season wrapped up in September with Flinders appearing in seven of the 10 grand finals - and being named the Champion Club for 2010.
Flinders also took the honour of Champion Club in 2009 - a fantastic result two years in a row for our school-based club.
The Grand Final day started early with the J2 Boys displaying plenty of spirit in their hard fought 1–0 victory over Caloundra. These boys started the season on a roll, but after a mid-season slump needed to work hard for the win.
The J1 competition is the Premier Junior (Under 17) Competition. Flinders were represented in both the boys and girls finals. Our experienced boys team had come away runners-up in the previous two seasons and it was to be their time to achieve the tremendous result of an undefeated season. After a nail-biting period of extra time, the boys were victorious 3–2 over Maroochydore.
After completing the round matches as Minor Premiers our Flinders J1 Girls were up against a strong Rebels team in the Grand Final. Another tight contest with the scores locked at 1–1 until the last two minutes when a penalty stroke was converted against our girls.
In another double, Flinders were also well represented in the Division 3 Men’s and Women’s matches. Both teams had already finished as Minor Premiers but wanted to finish things off in the number one spot. The ladies were triumphant with a 2–0 win over Caloundra in an entertaining match.
The men were also successful, achieving a 3–1 win over an experienced Maroochydore side. The Men’s team is a true Flinders blend of parents, Old Flinderians and students producing a wonderful character and spirit.
Our Division 2 Men followed with several exhausted players backing up for their second and third games. They achieved an amazing fourth consecutive premiership with a win over Maroochydore.
As our final contenders, the Division 1 Men had never been involved in a Grand Final before. The first half was tightly contested, however, the second period saw the more experienced Rebels side take the win. The boys should be proud of the spirit displayed.
Overall the 2010 season has been an outstanding success for Flinders Hockey. With 14 teams we have introduced many new players to our great spirit and team play. Hockey is a great game for people of all ages, and enjoyment of the game is a key to the success at Flinders. This success would not be possible without the hard work of all our coaches and managers.
