Madi wins Laser 4.7 Female Championship
(posted 01.02.11)
The Australian Youth Sailing Championships finished in January after three days and 10 races on Botany Bay, Sydney.
Sailing siblings Mitch and Madi Kennedy performed well with Madi winning the Laser 4.7 Female Championship and Mitch placing 2nd in the Laser Radial Male Championship.
Mitch is a 2010 graduate of Matthew Flinders Anglican College and Madi is a Year 11 student and Performance (Co-curricular) scholarship holder.
Both had highly competitive divisions with overseas sailors in both groups, Mitch had the hardest run with top British, Russian, Singapore, French, Japanese and New Zealand youth as well as the top Australians to compete against.
To indicate how strong the field was, Ashley Stoddart (9th) was the defending Australian Women's Youth Laser Radial Champion who represented Australia in the 2010 World Youth Championships in Brazil and Mark Spearman (10th) was the Australian Youth Laser 4.7 Champion who represented Australia in the 2010 World Youth Olympics in Malaysia.
Even though Mitch did not win National representative honours he is a champion among champions and with Madi successfully defending her 2010 Championship, both she and Mitch have done the Flinders community proud.
