Flinders’ 'culture of learning' shines on My School

Flinders fosters a 'culture of learning'.A “culture of learning” at Matthew Flinders Anglican College has seen the College score “substantially higher than average” in the NAPLAN testing results featured on the My School website.

My School is a Federal Government initiative independently compiled by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) information service. Logging onto the website - www.myschool.edu.au - enables parents to search the profiles of almost 10,000 Australian schools, comparing results from the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

The website was launched at the end of January with a flurry of publicity and website traffic to the new site. Schools can be compared with “statistically similar schools”, and results from 2008 and 2009 NAPLANs are available.

Flinders’ academic success on the My School website was featured on local television news bulletins and in the local newspapers.

The Buderim Weekly’s Nicole Fuge wrote: “Looking at each of the schools’ 2009 NAPLAN results, Matthew Flinders Anglican College was one of the top performers, receiving substantially above average results in Year 3 reading, writing and numeracy, Year 5 reading and grammar and punctuation, Year 7 reading and grammar and punctuation and Year 9 grammar and punctuation and numeracy. It also came in above average in Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 spelling and Year 9 reading.”

Matthew Flinders Anglican College principal Anthony Vincent said the school worked hard to foster a “culture of learning” and described the results as “reaffirming”, especially as the averages across the year levels proved the whole school was performing well.

“We’re very proud of the kids and the teachers, it’s a collaborative effort,” Mr Vincent said. “I was thrilled that not only were we above the national average for every area, but also in the similar schools’ category.”

Mr Vincent said it was a positive step forward to have access to the records, however, he stressed to parents that the My School website only measured academic performance and that there were many other areas to consider when choosing a school.

Flinders is proud of its strong academic performance but also offers an extensive co-curricular program of sports, art, drama and music.
