Matthew Flinders Anglican College’s Class of 2009 are OP heavyweights with more than a third of students achieving an OP 1-5 and more than a half an OP 1-7.

The 2009 OP Results are outstanding with the greatest number of Flinders graduates ever achieving OPs 1-5 (36.4%), double the State average of 18.33%, and the most ever receiving OPs 1-7 (52.3%/State average 28.72%).

Three out of four students (75.8%) achieved an OP 1-11 against a State average of just over half (50.94%), and nearly 90% of the 132 OP-eligible students achieved an OP 1-14 (State average 67.81%).

Five students - Patrick Beall, Alexandra Hand, Eloise Norman, Alex Tedman, Emily Thompson - achieved an OP1 and seven students an OP2. A dozen students received an OP3, another dozen OP4 and another dozen OP5. Ten students scored OP6 and 11 students an OP7.

These consistent results place Matthew Flinders as one of the top achieving schools on the Sunshine Coast and in Queensland.

“The students should be very happy with their OPs and high OPs do open up lots of options for tertiary pathways,” Director of Senior Schooling Nev Rowley said.

Mr Rowley said the results were “a wonderful reward for the hard work and commitment of the students”.

Of the OP1 students, both Alex and Alexandra plan to study Medicine at the University of Queensland, Patrick and Eloise have chosen Engineering, also at the University of Queensland, and Emily is off to Gatton to study Veterinary Science.

Last year, 99% of Flinders' QTAC applicants received an offer, with 2008 graduates choosing to study at the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University, University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Conservatorium, as well as interstate universities.

The outstanding 2009 OP results come after 68% of Matthew Flinders students achieved an 'A' or 'B' in the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test, compared to the State average of 43.4%. The QCS is used to scale students’ results across the State.

A total of 33.6% of Matthew Flinders students received an 'A' in the QCS test compared to 15.6% of the State, and 34.4% received a 'B' compared to 27.8% of the State.

In 2009, a total of 761 students across Queensland received an OP1. In order to achieve the top result, a student’s achievement needed to be in the top 2.67% of OP-eligible students in Queensland. A total of 3.8% of Matthew Flinders students received an OP1.
