Matthew Flinders Anglican College netball development squad took out Division 3 of the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball competition held over the June-July holidays.
The team, consisting of 10 players from Years 9 and 10, competed at the State Netball Centre in Brisbane over four days.
Coached by current U15 Sunshine Coast regional netball coach Vickey Frost and playing against Open ‘First’ and ‘Second’ teams from independent schools across the state, the girls won all of their opening seven preliminary matches. This saw them progress to the quarter finals where they drew with Clairvaux McKillop College Seconds, last year’s winner.
The players began strongly against the older, more experienced team, however, they were trailing Clairvaux at the end of the first and second quarters.
The third quarter was a showcase of excellence in student netball, where Flinders began to claw back, shooting accurately and defending aggressively. The girls finished this quarter trailing by one goal.
Flinders reduced their turn-overs as the fourth quarter got underway and were awarded many penalties, to draw ahead by a narrow margin which they were able to maintain until the end of the game.
The semi final was an opportunity for Flinders to showcase their clean defence and fluid court play. They dominated their opponents, Shalom College, Bundaberg, to convincingly win the game.
The Grand Final was played against Mt Alvenia Firsts team. While Flinders had won this game by 1 in the preliminary rounds, the game was very physical and Flinders was well aware of the strength of their opponents. The team played beautifully to take out the game by 8, to win Division 3, and receive the Candice Adams Trophy.
Team manager Katrina Ridley said the players had won the admiration of many players and officials for their skill and sportwomanship displayed across the four days of competition.
The team consisted of: Zoe Johnstone (C), Pepe Murrell (VC), Emily Travers Jones (VC), Naomi Fitzpatrick, Ashlee Unie, Charlotte Mungomery, Lucy O'Hara, Josephine Hungerford, Olivia Gore, Remy Samin, with thanks to Paris Hooper for filling in at short notice due to injury.
