2010 Regional Championships

Matthew Flinders Anglican College athletes have run into success taking the Secondary School Champion Trophy at the Sunshine Coast Independent Secondary Schools Cross Country held at Elizabeth Daniels Park at Buderim in May.

Flinders won convincingly by nearly 300 points over Sunshine Coast Grammar School in second place and St Andrew's Anglican College in third.

Flinders’ Primary School cross country team came a close second to St Andrew’s Anglican College in the race for the Primary Champion Trophy.

In the Secondary carnival, Flinders’ runners claimed seven of the 10 age divisions contested.

There were some outstanding results with individual wins by Sam Allen (13 Years Boys), Jaiden Sells (15 Years Boys), Naomi Fitzpatrick (14 Years Girls), Brigitte Fischer (15 Years Boys) and Danielle Allen (16 Years Girls). In the Primary School carnival Erica Hungerford won the 12 Years Girls division with a number of Flinders students claiming second and third places.

Age group winners were the 13, 14, 15 and 16 Years Boys and the 15, 16 and 17 Years Girls.
“In what were perfect conditions for cross country running our athletes acquitted themselves very well in what is a rehearsal for the Regional Carnival to be held at the same venue on Friday, June 4,” said Mr Phil Coppock, teacher-in-charge of Cross Country.

“As the defending champion school it is important that team members are training regularly to prepare themselves for this carnival. I encourage any students irrespective of their ability to also attend training sessions to improve their fitness, speed or endurance.

“The College team to compete at the Regional Championship will be selected the week prior.”

Primary winners included Hugo Burdon (9 Years Boys) and Grace Kaihau (11 Years Girls). The young runners took many top 10 places and the Flinders Primary team was pipped by just 30 points for the champions trophy.

Fischer takes State Champion title

The Queensland All Schools Cross Country Championships were held at St Paul’s College, Bald Hills on Saturday, May 8 and three of Flinders’ Secondary students competed in order to gain selection to the State Team to compete at the Nationals in August.

In a dominant display Year 10 student Brigitte Fischer won the State Champion title to add to her impressive list of achievements this year which include winning the Gatorade Queensland Tri Series open women’s division and a spectacular win at the National Triathlon Championship in Adelaide at the end of March.

Other performances of note were Year 11 student Danielle Allen in third place and Jaiden Sells, Year 10, finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th spot. These results add to the impressive list of results by Flinders athletes in recent years.
