Cross Country success for Flinders at Regional events

(posted 09.06.09)

Sunshine Coast cross country runners braved mud bath conditions to compete in both the Primary and Secondary Regional Cross Country events last week.

On Friday, June 5, Matthew Flinders Anglican College claimed both the Boys and Girls Championship School trophies and was named the overall School Champions for 2009. More than 1400 competitors from 57 secondary schools from Redcliffe to Noosa competed on a soggy course at Elizabeth Daniels Park.

Flinders had two individual winners on the day – Brigitte Fischer, pictured right, in the Girls 14 years age division, and Danielle Allen in the Girls 15 years division. The Buderim College also won three age divisions and a number of team members were named in the Sunshine Coast Regional Team to contest the State Championships next term.

Last Tuesday, June 2, the Primary students donned their runners and took to the same Buderim course. The sun came out while the races were on, however, the course was a mud bath and made running extremely difficult and challenging.

Flinders again fielded a strong team with six Primary students winning selection to attend the State Championships – an outstanding result from the one school.

Congratulations to Grace Kaihau, Lilli Burdon, Rory Bown, Tainui Kaihau, Ella Jones and Sam Allen who have all been selected in the Sunshine Coast Regional Team to compete at the State Championships on the Gold Coast next term.

In the 10 years age group, Grace Kaihau, ran an outstanding race to finish a convincing 1st place.

In the 11 years group, Lilli Burdon also took 1st spot, and in the boys 11 years age group, Rory Bown continued his terrific form to finish 2nd with Tainui Kaihau also running well into 5th place.

Year 7 student Sam Allen took 1st place in the boys 12 years making it three years in a row for a Regional Cross Country title, and in the girls 12 years, Ella Jones also ran exceptionally well to finish 2nd.
