Josh presents Best and Fairest Award in his name

(posted 30.10.09)

Home-grown AFL star and Brisbane Lions defender Josh Drummond has headed back to his old school, Matthew Flinders Anglican College, to inspire young up-and-coming players.

Josh was on hand on October 28 to acknowledge the 22 members of the Flinders AFL team, who were runners-up in this year’s Suncoast Lions Cup. He also presented the inaugural Josh Drummond Best and Fairest Award to Year 12 student James Griffin.

Josh graduated from Flinders in 2000, and, not surprisingly, was Captain of AFL in his final year at College. Since his debut with the Lions in 2005, Josh has become an integral part of the Brisbane line-up.

The future of AFL at Flinders is in great hands after a successful season on the footy field, which saw the Years 10-12 boys team finish top of their pool and reach the Grand Final.

After victory over Mountain Creek High School by 5 points, the boys followed this impressive win by taking care of cross town rivals Immanuel Lutheran College, winning by 4 goals.

Next challenge was the reigning champions St Teresa’s Catholic College. Like the Mountain Creek game, the boys were able to come home charging, and ran over St Teresa’s in the last quarter winning by 3 points.

The last game before finals was against the much fancied Caloundra State High School. Caloundra, with their vast experience, were too good, holding off yet another last quarter charge from the boys to win by 3 points.

Standing in the way of a Grand Finals berth was the previously undefeated St John’s. The Flinders boys accounted for them easily, winning by more than 10 goals. Unfortunately, it was not to be Flinders’ year, with St Teresa’s taking home the 2009 Cup.
