Young international cricketers take on Flinders' 1st XI

While they may have been on the wrong side of the results, there were many positives for the Matthew Flinders 1st XI after their three-day friendly tournament against touring sides from January 18-20.

The Anglican College hosted St Paul’s College from Hamilton in New Zealand as well as an Australian Sports Gateway XI, made up mostly of fringe English county players.

The home side struggled against both teams in its matches at Ballinger Park but organiser, Flinders Head of Secondary Gerry Price, said his squad had grown a lot against the quality opposition.

“It’s good for them to be exposed to very good quality players from outside the region,” he said.

“It’s a good warm-up for them for the rest of the year.

“The guys they’re playing against are some of the best junior players from England and some great players from New Zealand so they can hold their heads high.”

Flinders made 123 on Monday against St Paul’s with the touring side reaching the total with five wickets in hand.

The Gateway XI on Tuesday against St Paul’s posted over 250 runs which was too much for the New Zealand side to chase down.

Flinders had a tough task late Wednesday after the Gateway XI set the home team 280 which proved too big a task for the young side. The tournament helped prime Matthew Flinders Anglican College for the upcoming Australia Post knockout competition which Sunshine Coast schools have won three out of the past four years.
