Co-curricular Success
Opportunity, Success, Recognition
The pursuit of excellence in all that Flinderians do is central to the success of the Matthew Flinders Anglican College Co-curricular Program. Success is measured on an individual basis and we celebrate and reward students for improving their personal best in a range of sporting, musical, dramatic and other pursuits through our Colours Program and other public forums.
In 2010, the College awarded 107 Full Colours for representation at the Regional level and 65 students received Honours Colours for representing either Queensland or Australia.
At the highest level Matthew Flinders has forged an enviable position on the Sunshine Coast and indeed on the State and National level. Our students and staff work passionately to maintain the high standards set from each previous year and continue to raise the bar higher and higher.
2010 again saw an impressive number of talented Flinderians leave their mark on national and international sporting events. The year will go down in Flinders’ history for our first Youth Olympian (sailor Madison Kennedy, Yr 10) and our first Commonwealth Games representative (swimmer Tessa Wallace, Yr12, who won a silver medal). The race will be on between these two young women and our national representative triathletes, basketballers, footballers and kayakers to see who will be our first Olympian. We may not have to wait long with London 2012 creeping up quickly.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College’s results in the three major inter-school carnivals contested this year have again been very pleasing - 1st place in the Independent Zone Swimming Championships, 1st place in the Independent Zone Cross Country Championships, 2nd place in the Sunshine Coast Regional Cross Country Championships and 2nd place in the Independent Zone Athletics Championships.
Team sporting opportunities at Matthew Flinders Anglican College are the most comprehensive offered anywhere on the Sunshine Coast. We fielded 14 Netball, 12 Basketball, 10 Water Polo, 6 Touch, 6 Rugby, 2 Soccer, 4 Volleyball, 2 Hockey, a Cricket and an AFL team. These opportunities are enhanced by the invaluable network of Flinders Sporting Clubs that provide out-of-school fixtures for our students. A big congratulations and thanks to the parents and supporters who manage our Flinders Swimming, Tennis, Cricket, Hockey, Netball and Rugby Clubs.

Visiting teams have graced our playing fields from far and wide this year, with matches against Canadian, English and New Zealand opponents. It is always a pleasure to host visitors from abroad who enhance sporting experiences for our students. I must extend a big thank you to all the Flinders families who offer to share their homes and lives when asked to host these visiting teams. I know that there are a growing number of our students getting excited about being hosted by English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish families during our 2011 Netball, Hockey and Rugby Tour of Great Britain and Ireland.
2010 was a year filled with rich musical experiences in all areas. The diverse opportunities provided through performance are a genuine tribute to the on-going emphasis on high class curriculum instruction by the Music Department’s team of exceptionally talented, motivated and nurturing teachers, administration and managers who enable the growing from small to big - and the overall and ongoing development and passion of Flinders musicians. For further information, please see Music Excellence.
The music team consists of 31 individuals who collectively implement the curriculum, teach 463 studio tuition lessons per week, conduct and manage 17 ensembles who rehearse for 16 hours per week and perform in excess of 60 times per year. Nine Flinders students were representatives at State level for Chess and three debating teams qualified for the Queensland Debating Union finals.
Our commitment to ensuring our students and teams perform to their highest ability is reflected in the calibre of our coaching staff, our wonderful facilities and the enthusiasm of the College community to see our students achieving their best.
