Music Excellence

The Flinders Music Program is renowned for its exceptional quality and outstanding achievements. This reputable program supports, encourages and enhances individual, classroom and ensemble musicianship. At Matthew Flinders we hope to nourish the musical interest that is present in every child. This can be achieved through the development of a child’s awareness and response to music, expression and knowledge of music.

In the Primary years, Music is a compulsory subject at Matthew Flinders from Prep to Year 6. In the Secondary School, Year 7 students study music for the whole year and for students in Years 8 to 12, Music is an elective subject. For those Year 12 students who wish to study music as a career choice, Extension Music is available.

The curriculum provides a plethora of experiences from the early beginning of beat and movement to the understanding of and capacity to express musical thoughts and ideas as a composer, performer or musicologist. From Prep to Year 12, students gain skill on guitar, keyboard, woodwind, brass, strings, percussion and voice. The program integrates technology at each year level catering for all our young musicians.

Co-curricular music provides opportunities for the experience of synergy – the success of the group being greater than the individual contribution. The Band, Choir and Orchestra ensembles are designed to cater for all levels of ability and ages. The integrated Prep to Year 12 approach fosters refinement, extension and mastery for all musicians. Our ensembles experience success each year competing at district, regional and state competitions and eisteddfods as well as touring regionally and interstate.

The individual tuition program provides students with an option of a one-on-one lesson with an expert instructor. The individually, pedagogically-designed programs are devised to strengthen technique and expand musical expression. The results are evident in the large number of Flinders musicians who regularly achieve great successes at individual exams and ensemble level.
