Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Education program at Flinders aims for all students to experience the challenge of adventurous activities in a natural bush setting under the supervision of professionally trained staff.
The level of challenge is progressive, extending across all levels of the College from middle Primary to Year 10.
The program is designed to develop the following:
|
Respect:
Responsibility:
Decision-making:
Leadership:
Resilience:
Self Reliance:
|
For oneself, for others and for the environment
For self and for others, particularly with regard to safety
Through problem-solving and initiative games
By developing and demonstrating the skills of leadership
By learning to overcome challenges, persevere to the end and improve emotional strength
By learning that each person can draw upon their own abilities to complete tasks
|
Students participate in activities designed to help them achieve these objectives, including:
The outdoor activities challenge our young people at a personal level, and encourage the development of teamwork, responsibility and leadership.
Often the benefits of these outdoor experiences are not fully appreciated until years after the event, but our teachers and parents recognise significant growth in students' confidence, self-esteem and co-operation through our Camps Program.
The Years 7 and 8 camps incorporate a getting to know you aspect as well as Outdoor Education activites, while the camps for Years 9 and 10 are held in Term 3.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
Students who wish to combine their outdoor and co-curricular achievements with service to the community may work towards earning a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, coordinated by qualified College staff.
Training for these Awards requires discipline, time and commitment. Exceptional students may achieve all three levels of the Award while at Secondary school.
In 2011, all Year 9 students undertook the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award through their Mind, Body and Spirit personal development program. The adventurous journey component of the award was completed during Year 9 camp.
