Secondary School
In Year 7, students are introduced to a wide range of subjects taught by specialist teachers through a mandatory pattern of study; this allows them to make informed decisions when choosing their Year 8 electives later in the year.
Year 8 students continue to experience a wide range of subjects covering all of the Key Learning Areas. While most of these are 'core' subjects, which are completed by all students (including the study of a foreign language from a choice of French or Japanese), a range of ‘elective’ options provide the students with the opportunity to pursue their interests in the Key Learning Areas of the Arts, Technology, Agricultural Education, and Home Economics Education.
The Year 9 curriculum continues to expose students to a range of learning experiences while introducing more specialised studies in Geography and Industrial Skills.
In Year 10 all subjects except Mathematics and English are available as optional semester units. English and Mathematics are compulsory for the whole year. Most other subject areas offer at least two different units, any of which may be selected so long as the following guidelines are met:
-
Students must study at least one of the units on offer in each of the areas of Science and HPE.
-
All students are required to study at least one SOSE (Studies of Society and the Environment) unit, ie. History or Geography.
Many Year 10 units are designed to help prepare students for particular Year 11 subjects. For example, a specific Year 10 Science unit is offered for students who are considering taking Chemistry and Physics at Senior level, while others introduce Accounting and Information Processing and Technology (IPT).
