Rugby

Rugby is one of the premier sports for students at Flinders.

The Flinders Rugby program provides important physical and character development opportunities in the education of students at the College.

Flinders First XV - 2011.With the most experienced and qualified coaching team on the Sunshine Coast:
3 x Level 3 Coaches, 3 x Level 2 Coaches, 2 former Wallabies, a former England 7s Captain, a former Australian Schoolboy representative - our students are very well placed to reach their full potential in rugby.

However, we strongly believe it is not in the best interests of our rugby players to focus only on rugby; it is simply counter-productive, from both an educational and physical development perspective, to only develop ‘one trick ponies.’

Flinders Rugby players value all aspects of their education; the Rugby program is built around the notion that participation in Rugby is not an end in itself, but is a significant component of a student’s education at Flinders.

Our values are central to everything we do; primarily, we value fair play, sportsmanship, respect for others, the value of hard work, teamwork, mateship and appropriate attitudes on and off the rugby field.  See our Rugby Values for more details on this important aspect of the game.

It is common for Flinders Rugby players to achieve excellent academic results, and to actively participate in a diverse range of other co-curricular activities. (read story)

Many Flinders Rugby players have also achieved representative honours in Rugby.

Primary Rugby
Flinders Primary students have the opportunity to participate in the SCISSA Rugby competition on Thursday afternoons, but the main vehicle for participation and development of skills in the Primary years is through the Flinders Junior Rugby Club (FJRC).

The FJRC fields teams from under 7 to under 13 in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby competition on Saturday mornings between April and August. The under 12 team participates in the annual Armidale School Easter Carnival. For further information, refer to the FJRC link on this page.

Secondary Rugby
In the Secondary College, the emphasis turns to the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Rugby Union (SCSSRU) Competition, which runs throughout Term 2 on Wednesday afternoons and evenings.

In addition to this competition, a number of trial matches against local and visiting schools are organised each year. Flinders also hosts an annual Rugby Carnival around the Easter holidays for GPS/AIC/TAS, interstate and overseas U18 Rugby teams.

Rugby Players in Year 10 and 11 are eligible to participate in the biennial MFAC Sports Tour to the United Kingdom (Rugby, Netball and Hockey). Read here about the last UK Sports Tour

Flinders Rugby Staff
The administration and management of the Rugby program is the responsibility of Teacher in Charge of Rugby, Mr Cameron Martens. (cmartens@mfac.edu.au)

In terms of coaching, Flinders can proudly claim to have one of the most qualified and experienced coaching teams of any school.

Former Wallaby and current Level 3 Coach, Mr Bob Wood, is the Flinders Director of Coaching. His experience in coaching senior and schoolboy teams over a number of years is evident in the structured skill development program implemented at Flinders.

The Head Coach of the Flinders First XV, Mr Brent Timms, is also a qualified Level 3 coach with significant Senior and Schoolboy coaching experience in New Zealand and Australia. The co-coach of the first XV is former Australian Schoolboy player, Scott Kennedy.

Another former Wallaby (and the Reds most capped scrumhalf after Will Genia), Brett Johnstone, is involved in coaching junior secondary teams.

Supporting this group are three Level 2 Coaches and a number of Level 1 coaches. Further information on the Flinders Coaching team is available on the Coaches link.

Above all else, we value the team skills and character development opportunities provided by participation in the Flinders Rugby program.  We encourage all students to consider Rugby as one of their co-curricular options in their education at the College.
