Training

All training takes place from the Maroochy Sailing Club.
Monday: Intro to Sailing (Primary)
Tuesday: Junior training and coaching
Thursday: SSCIA
Thursday afternoon: Inter-school competition

Coaches

Flinders has very experienced coaches in charge of each division:

18yrs & Under - Mr Laurie Jarman
15yrs & Under – Mitchell Kennedy is a member of the Queensland Sailing Team and ranked highly in Australian Laser sailing.
12yrs & Under – Madison Kennedy, Yr 11S, is also a member of the Queensland Sailing Team and is a current Australian Champion.

Teacher in Charge

Mr Laurie Jarman is a retired Design Technology & Graphics teacher with 15 years experience as TIC of Sailing at MFAC (1992–2006). He has coached Flinders sailing teams to six Junior State Championship wins and in 2006 took the Flinders Senior team to Melbourne as a Queensland representative team in the Australian Championships. He was a boat builder by trade before serving in the Army as an engineer and raced offshore yachts for the Army. He has raced off the beach dinghies and catamarans at state and national level, holds a Restricted Coxswains, Yachting Queensland Race Management qualification and is an On Water Umpire. He was in charge of Queensland Secondary School Sailing from 1995–2001 and conducted Queensland Schools Teams Sailing Championships from Townsville to Southport. Recent Successes

Flinders still has an envious record of winning all but two Sunshine Coast Schools Team Sailing Championships since 1996:

  • The Flinders Senior Sailing Team is currently the Sunshine Coast Schools Champion Team.
  • Mitchell Kennedy in Yr 12 sails a Laser Radial Class Dinghy and is in the Queensland Sailing Team. This season Mitch was; the winner of the 2009 Sail Brisbane International, 5th Australian Open Radial Champion and 4th Australian Boys Youth Champion.
  • Maddison Kennedy in Yr 10 sails a Laser 4.7 Class Dinghy and is the current Australian Girls Champion and a National Representative to go to the World Youth Olympics this year.

Uniform

  • Afternoon training - College sports T-shirt, shorts and suitable footwear.
  • Flinders Team Representation - A Team PFD Type II will be provided. A long sleeved Flinders Sailing rash vest, College sports shorts, College cap and suitable footwear. Sailors are advised to wear non-skid sailing shoes, sailing gloves. Wetsuits are optional but shall be worn under the uniform. 

Sailing Kit

Flinders Representative sailors are encouraged to be prepared for the variable weather that can occur at a sailing event. They should build up a kit of sailing gear in a tough, waterproof carry bag. Not compulsory but recommended items to carry are:

  • a shackle key
  • water bottle
  • sun lotion
  • insect repellent
  • sailing gloves
  • wet weather gear and a towel

Primary Sailing

Flinders has a Term 1 and Term 4 “Learn to Sail” Program for Yrs 4, 5 & 6 and is managed by the TIC of Sailing, Mr Laurie Jarman.

  • The courses are aimed at introducing young students to enjoyment of the sport of sailing.
  • Students displaying competency and potential are selected as skippers to form a MFAC 12yrs and under team to have friendly competitions against other schools.
