Beyond the classroom, a plethora of sporting opportunities await at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. Played competitively or recreationally, sport is integral to the Co-Curricular experience at Flinders – helping students grow in confidence through perseverance, resilience, teamwork and leadership, celebrating success and dealing with disappointment. Our students excel as teams and individuals, with championship titles in many sports, including Athletics, Netball, Cross Country, Rugby and AFL.

AFL, or Australian Rules Football, continues to grow in popularity at Flinders. In 2018, Flinders was the AFL-X Sunshine Coast U18 Boys’ Champions, and in 2019 the Runners-Up. There are a mix of district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s and under 15s.

TEAMS

Primary:

Boys in Years 4 to 6 participate in SCISSA Junior gala day and practise days.

Secondary:

Boys and girls middle school and senior school teams participate in gala days.

The senior boys’ and girls’ teams participate in the  Monday night AFL-X regional championships. 

Open Boys compete in the Josh Drummond Cup.

Flinders has a proud history of athletics success, winning past Primary and Secondary Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) Independent District Championships.

Successful students from these events gain selection to compete at district, regional, state and national championships.

Flinders is the current 9-12 years and 13-18 years Independent District Champions.

TEAMS

Primary

The Primary athletics team is for children aged 9-12-years. This team reflect the students’ age at 31 December of the current year, rather than their scholastic year. For example, a student turning 12 who is in Year 7, will represent our College in the Primary 9-12 years team.

Secondary

The Secondary Flinders athletics team is for 13–19 years. This team reflects the students’ age, rather than their scholastic year. 

Our College may form teams at state and national team knock-out events when interest is strong.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports at Matthew Flinders Anglican College with more than 300 students participating. Our College is represented in both Secondary and Primary level, and also supports Club-based competition through the parent-run Flinders Basketball Club. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s.

In 2018, our Senior Boys A team finished seventh in the top division of the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament. Flinders is also the current Senior Boys A Regional Champions.

Primary

Our College has multiple Primary teams participating in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days.

Secondary

Our College enters many teams in the Semester 2 Sunshine Coast Schools Basketball Competition against independent, Catholic and government schools, traditionally played on Friday evenings. These competitions are divided into boys and girls at Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10, and Open.

Our Senior Boys A team also competes in the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament in Brisbane each year.

Club-based Competition

Flinders students also have the flexibility to play all year round through the Flinders Basketball Club as part of the Suncoast Clippers Basketball Club competition.

Flinders Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

Cricket is a favourite sport among boys and girls at Flinders. Our College is blessed with outstanding cricket facilities, including one indoor cricket net, five outdoor nets, one junior cricket field with artificial pitch, and one floodlit field with a turf pitch. Many of our matches are played under lights. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s.

Old Flinderians currently play at Sunshine Coast Queensland A Grade and First Class level. 

Teams

Primary

T20 Cricket is available for both boys and girls from Years 4-6 in the SCISSA Gala Day format, across Terms 1 and 2.

Secondary

Flinders is represented by First XI and Middle School XI teams in the Secondary School. These teams will play a variety of friendly matches against local, inter-state and international teams, as well as participate in state-wide T20 Knock-out Competitions.

Club-based Competition

Flinders Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

There are many opportunities for junior players (aged 8-16 years) through Flinders Cricket Club. Most of these Club matches are conducted on weekends.

girl runs cross country MFACFlinders has a proud history of cross country success at district and regional level, and team selection is highly sought after by students. Following Primary and Secondary Inter-House Championships, a team of 100 athletes (six from each age group) are selected to represent our College at the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) Cross Country Championships. Successful students may gain selection to compete at district, regional, state and national championships.

Flinders is the current 13-18 years Independent District Champions, whilst our 9-12 year team finished in second place in 2018. 

Teams

Primary

The Primary Cross Country team is for children aged 9-12 years. This team reflect the students’ age at December 31 of the current year, rather than their scholastic year. For example, a student turning 12 who is in Year 7, will represent our College in the Primary 9-12 years team. There are six boys and six girls in each age group. Flinders teams compete at the Independent District Championships, regularly placing in the top three.  

Secondary

The Secondary Flinders Cross Country team is for children aged 13–19 years. This team reflects the students’ age, rather than their scholastic year. There are six boys and six girls in each age group. Flinders teams compete at the Independent District Championships.

Our College may form teams or send individual students to compete at state and national team knock-out events when interest is strong.

Primary and Secondary students have the opportunity to be part of our College’s equestrian team. Competitions run all year, including many of the major inter-school events in Brisbane, the local and state show circuit, and state and national titles.

Interest is developing among riders to form teams to compete in QISEA Dressage and Showman events.

The Flinders Fitness Centre is staffed by qualified strength and conditioning specialists who cater to the health and wellbeing of all staff and students, including general fitness, injury rehabilitation and sport-specific strength and conditioning.

Secondary

Our Fitness Centre is used for whole-class activities for Middle School Health and Physical Education classes, and for our Senior students in their Fit For Life classes.

Many of our student athletes work in the Fitness Centre in team-based activities before and after school. A number of our elite student athletes, who are granted academic relief to support their training load, may undertake individualised training during the day.  

Our Fitness Centre Facilities are open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm in Term time, and at various times during school holidays.

Football (soccer) is rapidly growing in popularity at Flinders, a result of Flinders Football Club’s foundation a few years ago and the development of the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) Secondary competition. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s.

Flinders is fortunate to have the services of Paul Arnison (UEFA B Licenced Coach) as our Director of Coaching as we boost the standard of coaching and training offered at Flinders.

Flinders is the current Junior Girls A District Champions. Our College has had students represent the region and the state in recent years.

Flinders enters boys’ and girls’ football team for students in Years 4-6 in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days.

Secondary

Flinders Secondary football teams play in the Sunshine Coast Independent Secondary Sports Association (SCISSA) in a Wednesday afternoon football competition. Senior students in Years 11 and 12 play during Term 1. Players from Years 7 to 8 and Years 9 to 10 train in Term 3 and play in Term 4.

Club-based Competition

Flinders Football Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

Flinders Football Club teams compete in Sunshine Coast Football Federation fixtures on weekends from March to September. The Club enters teams in MiniRoos for boys and girls aged 5-11 years, and full-field fixtures for children aged 12 and up.

Matthew Flinders Anglican College prides itself on its strong support for top hockey players on the Sunshine Coast. Located next to the Sunshine Coast Hockey Centre, Flinders fields multiple teams in the region with great success. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s and under 18s.

A number of current students and Old Flinderians represent Queensland and Australia in both field hockey and indoor hockey each year. 

Teams

Primary

The Minkey Hockey development program is offered to Prep to Year 3 students and the Hookin2Hockey program is also offered to our younger students through Flinders Hockey Club.

Secondary

Boys’ and girls’ 1st XI teams and occasionally a 2nd XI will play friendly fixtures against local or visiting interstate or international teams. Our College enters girls’ and boys’ 1st XI teams in the state-wide Schools Knock-out Competition, and regional or Queensland All Schools carnivals.

Club-based Competition

Flinders Hockey Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

Juniors for boys’ and girls’ teams at J3, J2 and J1 level cater for students aged 10–17 years and Senior Division 1, 2 or 3 teams enable lifelong participation. The Sunshine Coast Hockey Association Competition is held on weekends. Junior and Senior teams participate in the season, which starts in March and ends in September. Fixtures are played close to our College at Ballinger Park, Buderim.

Matthew Flinders Anglican College is regarded a powerhouse school within Queensland for netball. Flinders has achieved great success within our local schools’ competition as well as at state-wide carnivals, with many players gaining regional and state selection. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s. This year, Flinders players are involved in Queensland teams and State Schoolgirls’ teams. 

Flinders success in netball includes the following titles:

  • Queensland Primary Schools Cup Champions 2014, 2016, 2017
  • QISSN (Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball) Champions 2017, 2018
  • Queensland Vicki Wilson Cup Champions 2016, 2017

Flinders is proud to have the expertise of Lauren Nourse, former captain of Queensland Firebirds and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, as our Director of Netball and Head Coach. Lauren inspires and nurture our young netballers to reach their potential.

Flinders facilitates a Netta development program for girls from Prep to Year 3. Flinders also has multiple Primary teams for Years 4-6 girls participating in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days. Flinders also enters our best team into the Queensland Primary Schools Cup.

Secondary

Our College teams participate in the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Netball Competition, held in Semester 1 on a weekday afternoon at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association. This is available to students in the Secondary School, with players graded into the following age-based teams: Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10), Senior (Years 11 and 12) and Firsts (Open). Flinders also enters our best Middle School and Senior School teams into the Queensland Vicki Wilson Shield and Vicki Wilson Cup respectively. Flinders 1st VII also participates in the annual QISSN Championship held at various locations throughout Queensland during the June-July holidays. 

Club-based Competition

Flinders Netball Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

Flinders Netball Club is available for girls of all ages. The Club aims to foster and encourage the skills of anyone who wants to learn about netball – playing, coaching, umpiring or supporting – while getting fit and having fun. The teams compete in the outdoor netball competition run by the Sunshine Coast Netball Association at the Fisherman’s Road Sporting Complex in Maroochydore on a Saturday.

Rugby is thriving at Flinders as our boys and girls of all ages enjoy playing in various tournaments and tours. Flinders also hosts inbound teams from the UK, New Zealand, Japan and Canada, which is a rich experience for our players who enjoy making new friends from around the world who share their passion for rugby. There are a mix of district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s.

Teams range from Under 7s through to the First XV, as well as Rugby 7s for boys and girls aged 12-18 years. Under 13s to 1sts play Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Rugby Union (SCSSRU) fixtures against Independent, Catholic and Government schools in the region, while Under 10s and 12s compete within the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) competition. Flinders Rugby Club welcomes players to join the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union’s weekend competition.

Flinders is regularly represented at regional and combined secondary schools levels. Three Old Flinderians are currently playing on the Women’s AON 7s circuit for University of Queensland and Griffith University.

Primary

Flinders enters Rugby VIIs teams for students in Years 4-6 in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days. Our College will enter a XV a-side team in the Sunshine Coast All Schools competition, of which we are defending champions. In addition, Queensland Rugby Union offers a term-based ‘Rookies to Reds’ development program at Flinders annually.

Secondary

Flinders Secondary teams compete from 1st XV down to U13 in the SCSSRU fixtures on Wednesday evenings throughout Term 2 against Independent, Catholic and Government schools in the region. These matches are complemented by a number of pre-season fixtures as well as hosting in-bound touring teams. Flinders send teams on an annual Darling Downs tour and our 1st XV participate in the John Elder Country Rugby Cup.

Flinders commit boys’ and girls’ 7s teams to local and state-wide tournaments where there is sufficient interest.

Club-based Competition

Flinders Rugby Club is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

Flinders Rugby welcomes players from within and outside of the College to participate in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union’s competition. Players from outside the College are embraced and encouraged to participate in all training and coaching activities.

Flinders Rugby Club has the opportunity to enter teams from ages Under-6 upwards. Games are played from March to September on Saturdays, with older team games sometimes scheduled on a Friday evening. Games are played at different venues across the Sunshine Coast from Caloundra to Noosa.

Sailing has a long history at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, with many trophies bearing the Flinders name. Flinders teams are the reigning champions of the Sunshine Coast Inter-Schools Regatta at both Primary and Secondary levels, as well as competing and consistently placing in the top four at the annual Australian Schools Match Racing Championships.

Learn to Sail groups are co-ordinated for Primary students as part of a development squad. Flinders enters teams into the Sunshine Coast Inter-Schools Regatta at Noosa annually.

Secondary

Secondary sailing teams train on a regular basis and compete at both local and national events.

Club-based Competition

Flinders Sailing Club sport is co-ordinated by parent volunteers and complements our College-managed inter-school sport.

The Flinders Sailing Club coordinates training and racing opportunities for our Primary-aged development squad and Learn to Sail group (SCISSA) and our Secondary team in inter-school and club-based events, locally and interstate. We focus on the development of our younger competitive sailors at Maroochydore Sailing Club, while our more experienced sailors hone their match racing skills at Mooloolaba Yacht Club. Parents also provide wonderful support to help their children succeed in this sport.

Flinders is home to many talented and successful swimmers and Olympic swim coaches, and boasts a magnificent Aquatic Centre run by the Flinders Aquatic Academy. Competitive swimming is available to boys and girls aged seven to 18 years on the back of the comprehensive learn-to-swim program offered at Flinders Aquatic Academy. Flinders has a proud record of success at many events with some students gaining selection to compete at district, regional, state and national championships.

Flinders is the current District Champions for both 9-12 years and 13-18 years. Flinders students have medalled at national level in both school and club swimming events.

The Primary Swimming team is for children aged 9-12 years. This team reflect the students’ age at 31 December in the current year, rather than their scholastic year. For example, a student turning 12 who is in Year 7, will represent our College in the Primary 9-12 years team. Flinders swim team competes at the Independent District Championship (SCISSA) early in Term 1 each year. Flinders enters teams in the Queensland Schools 10-12 years Swimming Relay Carnival at Chandler, Brisbane each November.

Secondary

The Secondary Swimming team is for children aged 13-18 years. This team reflect the students’ age, rather than their scholastic year. Flinders swim team competes at the Independent District Championship (SCISSA) early in Term 1 each year.

Club-based Competition

The Flinders Aquatic Academy (FAA) was the brainchild of experienced Olympic swim coaches Jan Cameron (who passed in 2018) and Chris Mooney. The Academy provides club-based swimming opportunities through both in-house Friday-night friendly meets and through an affiliation with the Sunshine Coast Spartans Swim Club for inter-club meets, including regional, state and national events.

Our College enters Primary and Secondary teams in the Sunshine Coast Tennis Association’s Saturday competition throughout the summer and winter seasons. Flinders actively supports tennis, giving families within the College community access to the school’s courts (at no cost) through the Key Holders Initiative. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s and under 19s.

The Matthew Flinders Anglican College Tennis Open (Flinders Open) is a school-run competition for all students. Girls’ and boys’ singles, doubles and mixed doubles are contested at three levels: Primary, Junior Secondary (up to and including Year 10) and Senior Secondary.

Our College courts host the Andrew Kratzmann Tennis Academy (AKTA), which provides a quality program catering for beginners through to nationally ranked juniors before and after school. Andrew is a former professional tennis player who represented Australia at Davis Cup and won nine doubles titles on the ATP circuit.

Tennis development lessons for Primary students are facilitated through AKTA lessons and X-Point Fixtures. Our College enters teams in the Queensland Primary Schools Knockout competitions.

Secondary

Inter-school tennis opportunities for Years 7-12 occur through Term 2 in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) Secondary competitions. Tennis development lessons for Secondary students are facilitated through AKTA lessons and X-Point Fixtures. Our College enters boys’ and girls’ teams in the Queensland Secondary Schools Knockout competitions.

Club-based Competitions

Andrew Kratzmann Tennis Academy (AKTA) facilitates weekend club-based play in the Sunshine Coast Tennis Association Saturday fixtures competition throughout the summer (October to February) and winter (May to September) seasons.

Touch Football is rapidly growing in popularity at Flinders as elite coaches join our Flinders program and the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) Secondary competition continues to develop. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 12s, under 15s and under 18s.

Following our success in 2018 where Flinders won three SCISSA Premierships, including the Girls Senior A (the fourth year in a row), in 2019 Flinders contested 10 grand finals, including three Premiership wins.

Flinders’ Senior A Mixed Team participate in the prestigious Queensland All-Schools tournament. 

Flinders is fortunate to have the services of Chris Jordan as our Head Coach of Touch Football, along with coaches Peta Rogerson (former Australian captain) as Director of Coaching for Touch Football, and Old Flinderian Mia Johnstone (Australian representative) helping our players to reach their potential.

Flinders Secondary touch football teams play in the Sunshine Coast Independent Secondary Schools Sports Association (SCISSA) in a week-day competition through Term 3. Teams for boys and girls play in groupings of Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10, and Years 11 and 12.

Flinders enters teams into Sunshine Coast and Queensland All Schools carnivals.

Volleyball is flourishing at Flinders as our College’s strong coaching team supports our students to excel. There are district, regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 15s and under 18s.

In 2018, Flinders secured two Premierships in the SCISSA competition, and had three male students selected in a Queensland talent identification program. In 2019, our Intermediate Boys A and Senior Boys B teams won their grand finals.

Flinders enters boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams for students in Years 4-6 in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions in Semester 2. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days.

Secondary

Flinders Secondary volleyball teams play in the Sunshine Coast Independent Secondary Sports Association (SCISSA) in a Wednesday afternoon competition through Term 3. Competitions for Years 7 and 8, and Years 9 and 10 play through Term 1. The Years 11 and 12 competitions are held in Term 2. In addition to the SCISSA fixtures, Flinders enters teams into the highly competitive Trish Buckley Shield tournament, held on Friday nights at the Caloundra Stadium.

Water Polo has risen in prominence at Flinders over the years. Our students are blessed to have our Flinders Aquatic Centre on-site to train and compete in, under the guidance of experienced coaches. There are regional, state and national representative pathways through the school competition for under 17s.

Flinders water polo players won the Intermediate Boys and Intermediate Girls A Sunshine Coast Schools Premierships in 2017. 

In 2019, Flinders had six teams in the finals with four of the teams winning gold, namely the Junior Girls A, Intermediate Boys A, Senior Girls A and Intermediate Girls B. Silver medals were won by the Intermediate Girls B and Junior Girls B.

Flinders enters boys’ and girls’ teams in water polo and its modified junior alternative, Flippa Ball, in the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sport Association (SCISSA) gala day competitions in Semester 2. Many of these teams will also participate in inter-school friendly matches, where possible, in the lead-up to the gala days.

Secondary

Flinders Secondary water polo teams play in the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Water Polo Competition during Terms 3 and 4. These teams play in divisions of Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10, and Open. The competition is held weekly at various pools across the Sunshine Coast.
