Sport is an important part of College life at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. There are many quality sports facilities on campus to enable students to pursue their sporting hobbies, improve their fitness and skills, and learn through the Health and Physical Education curriculum.
The Flinders Sports Centre is an impressive 1200-metre-squared multi-purpose indoor facility. Its FIVB- and FIVA-approved courts are suited for netball, basketball, handball, badminton and volleyball. The Sports Centre also features an indoor cricket net that enable the College’s cricket teams to train without weather interruptions.
The Flinders Sports Centre plays host to many inter-school competitions, including netball, Sunshine Coast Schools’ Basketball League, SCISSA volleyball, as well as community-run contests.
The Sports Centre is also a valuable indoor learning space for students during Health and Physical Education lessons.
Whole-school assemblies and special functions are held in the Sports Centre. Facilities located across both levels also include staff offices, teaching spaces, bathroom and change facilities, and meeting rooms.
Each year, matches with local and international touring teams are held in the Sports Centre. A particular highlight is when the Old Flinderians’ alumni plays student teams in both netball and basketball.
Flinders Fitness Centre
Adjacent to the Sports Centre is the Flinders Fitness Centre. The Centre is well equipped with cardio and resistance training equipment and is staffed by qualified strength and conditioning specialists who cater to the health and wellbeing of all staff and students. The focus is broad to encompass general fitness, injury rehabilitation and sport-specific strength and conditioning.
Multi-purpose Outdoor Courts
Next door to the Flinders Fitness Centre and Sports Centre are multi-purpose outdoor courts. These courts can be configured to provide four courts for either netball, basketball or tennis and are home to the Andrew Kratzmann Tennis Academy (AKTA), a quality program catering for students with a passion for tennis. Andrew trains beginners through to nationally ranked juniors, before and after school. Students benefit from Andrew’s experience and love of tennis as a former professional tennis player who represented Australia at Davis Cup and won nine Doubles titles on the ATP circuit.
The College’s main Anthony Vincent Oval and the neighbouring Forrester Fields are beautifully manicured, quality flood-lit sporting ovals. Students enjoy using both ovals for sports training sessions, Health and Physical Education lessons, sports carnivals and events, and even as a pleasant spot to enjoy morning tea and lunch breaks.
The Forrester Fields, located over the Boardwalk from the main oval, features elevated viewing, club house and change facilities.
The fields are popular with schools visiting to play inter-school fixtures, especially cricket, rugby, Australian Football, soccer and touch football under floodlights.
Keep an eye out for the neighbouring kangaroos who sometimes visit the ovals to enjoy the grass when the campus is quiet but beware of the mythical Buderim Beast, hiding in the forest…
