Matthew Flinders Anglican College students, staff and families celebrated 2026 Reconciliation Week across the campus, exploring the core values of reconciliation: relationships, respect and shared understanding.
Flinders Early Learning Centre (FELC)
The FELC community hosted its annual Great Book Swap, exchanging pre-loved books in return for gold coin donations in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Their contributions help improve literacy access for children in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
In Bush Kindy, children gathered around the fire with their Grandfriends to read Dream Little One, Dream by acclaimed Palyku creators Sally Morgan and Ambelin Kwaymullina. The story sparked meaningful conversations about nature, belonging and connection to Country.
Primary School
Old Flinderian and Wakka Wakka artist David Williams (Class of 2000) joined our Primary Assembly. David delivered an Acknowledgement of Country and shared his inspiring journey from Flinders Music Scholar to international performer.
David spoke about the pride he takes in his Wakka Wakka heritage and the role culture plays in shaping identity and storytelling, later inspiring Year 5 students to connect with Country and explore the foundations of The Dreaming in their writing.
As part of their Impact unit on "Legacy", Year 4 students reflected on David's lasting impact at the College. They learned more about the Flinders Reconciliation Gilimbaa artwork, Surrounded by our past, united by our future, which David created in collaboration with the College’s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee in 2022–23.
Year 4 students also learned from Mandandanji and Noonuccal artist Kiz Costelloe, who shared the symbols, stories and meanings behind her artwork.
Secondary School
Students from Helpmann and Mawson House attended a special National Reconciliation Week Chapel Service, where Uncle Milton Walit and Aunty Lydia Fairhall shared songs, stories and reflections.
To close the week, Senior Secondary students hosted peers from Siena Catholic College for spirited lunchtime games of Buroinjin, a fast-paced running and passing ball game played by the Kabi Kabi people of south Queensland.
Flinders Reconciliation in Action Plan
The College's Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group recently delivered the updated RAP, shared on our website here. The RAP outlines how we commit ourselves in the Classroom, Around the School and in the wider Community to an attitude of respectful listening, eager to learn and be enriched by the wealth of cultural wisdom connected to Country of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
