Mr Andy Fraser, the Flinders Director of Dramatic Arts, said the 25 talented students involved in the co-curricular production had all risen to the challenge of telling this fantastical Grimmsian tale for the entire family.
“The Snow is a magical comedic piece interlaced with elements that are dark and mysterious, heartfelt and sincere,” Mr Fraser said.
“This complexity makes it a captivating experience for audiences and a transformative journey for young actors and the technical crew, who have evolved through deep character exploration, collaborative problem-solving and creative risk-taking.
"Over 10 weeks of rehearsals, our Middle School cast and crew has embraced every opportunity to grow in skill and confidence, whether acting on stage or building technical nous behind the scenes.”
Mr Fraser was able to secure the rights to stage The Snow at Flinders by leveraging his longstanding relationship with Barking Gecko’s Artistic Director, Sam Longley, who quickly granted an exemption to their exclusive Australia-wide license—allowing a Queensland high school to benefit without impacting the professional company's audience.
One of the lead roles is performed by Sophia C in Year 7 who is passionate about the performing arts and has been building her skills and confidence through the Flinders co-curricular and curricular programs since joining the College in Year 5. Sophia was part of the Flinders Youth Theatre during her Primary School years and is also a member of Flinders Dance, the College’s co-curricular dance program which launched in 2020. Sophia also sings with the College’s Lumina Voices and the College Chorale.
Year 9 student Ally L is also playing a lead role, and her passion for Dramatic Arts has seen her perform in every Flinders production since the beginning of 2024, totalling eight shows. Ally joined the College in Year 7 and is also a dedicated member of the Flinders Music Program; she plays percussion in the Wind Symphony and College Band, and sings in the College Chorale, Contemporary Voices and Chamber Voices.
