Top NAPLAN Results for Flinders Students in 2023

Students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College are consistently attaining high levels of literacy and numeracy, with outstanding results achieved in the 2023 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

In the 2023 NAPLAN, on average Flinders students performed in excess of the national average (mean scale scores) in all domain areas and across all year levels.

And in 2021 and 2022, Flinders was the top ranked school on the Sunshine Coast.

The NAPLAN provides an important national measure of students in Years 3, and 5 in Primary School, and Years 7 and 9 in Secondary School. Students are tested on their fundamental literacy and numeracy skills in the domains of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, and Numeracy. The questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.

Principal Michelle Carroll said Flinders was committed to ensuring that students of all abilities and levels, from Prep to Year 12, were provided with quality teaching and learning to build strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

Flinders students also showed significant growth compared to students across Australia, with the following highlights achieved in 2023.

  • The cohort average showed that Flinders students performed at least 8% stronger than the nation’s average across all year levels (with Year 3 at 15% stronger)
  • Flinders’ Year 7 average growth rate exceeded the national growth rate across all domains by 20% (from previous NAPLAN testing)
  • The proportion of Flinders students achieving in the top band (Exceeding) is 2.5 times the state average across all grades (2.75 in Primary and 2.25 in Secondary).

Ms Carroll said, “NAPLAN is one measure in a range of measures that provides Flinders with insights into our students’ progress.

“We use NAPLAN and other national assessment data to constantly review and refine our curriculum programs to ensure individual students are challenged, inspired and supported, and experience joy in learning.

“Together with strong numeracy and literacy skills, we want our students to develop design thinking and entrepreneurial skills and dispositions to equip them as graduates to thrive in a future workplace and enjoy healthy, successful and rewarding lives beyond Flinders.

“Our new state-of-the-art Infinity Centre, which opened in 2024 as part of our Flinders Masterplan, is a key facility to support our approach to embrace innovative learning and explore design thinking pedagogy.”
