Matthew Flinders Anglican College lies at the foothills of Buderim on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. Founded in 1990, we nurture students from the Flinders Early Learning Centre and the Preparatory Year all the way up to Year 12 as graduates. A co-educational independent College, Flinders offers a dynamic and healthy master-planned campus that blends with the natural, sub-tropical environment.

It is a time for growth and innovation at Flinders as we commit to our Flinders Masterplan. The project builds on our reputation for quality, excellence and innovation and provides contemporary learning spaces for our 1,400 students from Prep to Year 12.

In January 2024, the College opened its state-of-the-art Infinity Centre, offering Secondary students a dedicated precinct to actively explore Design Thinking pedagogy and gain diverse skills across a range of subjects.

The Masterplan also delivered the new Year 7 Precinct, Flagship Centre for our Years 5 and 6 students and new Wonderarium learning centre for our Primary students.

Flinders also boasts many exceptional educational, creative arts and sporting facilities, including our Performance Centre; new Digital Zone; Flinders Aquatic Centre; and other top sports facilities, including two multi-purpose floodlit sports fields.

Our Chapel of St Nicholas provides a calm and reflective place for our College community. There is also the Flinders Shop for uniforms and books; the Quarterdeck Cafe, two college tuckshops with a commercial kitchen and the Flinders Farm with long-time resident, Erol the Emu.

Performance Centre

At the entry to our College is the impressive Performance Centre, used by students across both our Primary and Secondary Schools as well as the local community for hire.

The Performance Centre enables our College to facilitate assemblies, rehearsals, learning projects, personal development workshops, guest presentations, design summits, musical productions, concerts and more.

What's more, the Centre enables our students to experience learning within and presenting on stage of a state-of-the-art facility that is equal to professional theatres and venues. It was designed to extend the choices of teaching methods at Flinders. As well as the 600-seat main stage Performance Centre venue, there is also a 120-seat traditional Drama Theatre and a more intimate 90-seat Experimental Theatre.

The Performance Centre is also available for hire. For more information, please contact peformancecentre@mfac.edu.au.

Primary School Facilities

Classrooms in our Primary School all open onto grassed areas, gardens and nature play spaces to enable our students to enjoy active break times and peaceful natural surrounds for enhanced wellbeing.

Our Primary School campus features The Flagship Centre, a stunning new facility as part of the Flinders Masterplan. The Centre is for our Years 5 and 6 students. There is also the newly opened innovative Wonderarium learning centre and the Junior Primary Nature Playground to support our youngest students in having fun outdoors while developing their physical, social and emotional skills.

The Primary campus also features art and music rooms, the Primary Pavilion with two covered sports courts, tuckshop, outside schools hours care service and veggie gardens. The Outdoor Classroom encourages students to connect with nature on a deeper level by engaging in learning that flows out of the classroom door. Students also love to visit the on-site Flinders Farm to check on the animals, water the veggie gardens and help to harvest the honey from the resident bees.

Secondary School Facilities

Our Secondary School campus includes the brand new dedicated Year 7 Precinct as part of the Flinders Masterplan. There are also specialist Graphics and Information Technology classrooms, Science laboratories, Design and Technology Centre, Art Precinct with a Gallery, tuckshop with commercial kitchens and a dedicated chef, and the Flinders Farm agricultural hub.

Specialised Learning Spaces

At Flinders, we recognise that contemporary learning spaces help to support effective teaching and learning. Here we feature specialist learning spaces that complement Flinders’ classrooms and learning precincts.

The Digital Zone

The Digital Zone at Matthew Flinders Anglican College is a dedicated space for Flinders students from Years 7 to 12. Students use the space to explore areas of Digital Technology, Film, TV, New Media and Electronics. Students explore activities such as programming, coding, robotics, gaming and e-sports.

The intention is for students to feel that anything is possible in this space and that they have the facilities, technology and teaching support to test their big ideas and processes, and create.

The new Year 7 Precinct opened in August 2020 as part of the Flinders Masterplan's suite of new facilities.

The Precinct features three state-of-the-art science laboratories and three general purpose classrooms that can be opened into one large collaborative space.

The Precinct also provides two modern and aspirational communal spaces:

  • ‘The Hive’ is a break-out space for students to brainstorm, present, discuss and relax.
  • The Bungaree Room is a large presentation room for staff to meet in their professional learning teams. It also has two glass panelled 'quiet' rooms that can be used to prepare for presentations and to complete reporting.

To learn more, read the news story about the building opening in August 2020.

The Flinders Farm is a half-hectare property on-site at the College. It is used as a vibrant, hands-on learning hub for Flinders’ more than 1,400 students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12.

The farm boasts three varieties of mandarin trees, multiple vegetable gardens, nine productive bee hives, two ducks named Peking and Webster, chickens, four Dorper sheep and Erol the emu who came to the College as a chick from the Forest Glen Deer Sanctuary 22 years ago.

Through Agriculture Science in Year 9 as well as custom workshops and lunchtime visits, the students are able to learn vital skills such as how to build veggie gardens, make nutrient-rich soil, design and implement fertigation systems, grow food and compost. Students also help the Farm's expert manager to harvest the honey, which is up for sale, and then turn the waste materials into beeswax for candles and other products.

Read the news story about the Flinders Farm here.

The Outdoor Classroom is a special learning and creative zone for our Primary School students. The open-air nature space is fringed by rainforest and features tree log seats and recycled palette tables.

Tuckshops

Our Flinders community is fortunate to have access to healthy, nutritious and fresh food options through our two College tuckshops, which are open from 8:00am to 3:30pm every day of the school year.

The Secondary School tuckshop operates with a modern commercial kitchen, and also services the Primary School tuckshop. The Primary tuckshop has adopted state and national guidelines for ‘Smart Choices’ in selecting food availability. The Secondary tuckshop offers a slightly broader range of options in keeping with the developing maturity of students from Years 7 to 12. It also offers a breakfast menu for students in the Senior School.

Parents are able to place advance orders online for younger students. Secondary students (and Primary families who choose to participate) can use their student ID cards, so they can make ‘cashless’ purchases in our tuckshops by accessing their pre-funded online accounts.

Quarterdeck Café

The Flinders campus has its very own cafe, the Quarterdeck Café, which is a friendly and welcoming place for students, staff and parents in the College community as well as people from the wider community.

It is open from 7:30am to 3:30pm on school days, and has indoor seating as well as seating outdoors on the lovely large deck area framed by lush gardens.

At last count, the cafe served close to 900 drinks each week, including its delicious signature organic coffee and teas, smoothies, fruit juices and other drinks.

The food menu provides an array of options and weekly specials, including wraps, salads, sushi, soups in the cooler months, and plenty of tempting sweet treats of cakes and slices.
