Matthew Flinders Anglican College invites parents and carers at Flinders and in the Sunshine Coast community to the second presentation in the 2020 Flinders Speaker Series on Tuesday, 17 March from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Dr Jared Cooney Horvath (PhD, MEd), an expert in the field of Educational Neuroscience with a focus on learning, memory and attention, will share his presentation, ‘A Tour Through the Teenage Brain’.

Dr Horvath will address the question many parents ponder: what is going on with my teenager? Sometimes they’re bored, disengaged and unmotivated, and other times they’re risky, unpredictable and emotionally volatile.

The presentation will explore the brain, how it develops, and how things change during adolescence and early adult-hood. Through fun, interactive activities, parents will learn how (and why) teenagers think differently than adults, and consider ways to support them academically, emotionally, and cognitively.

Dr Horvath has conducted research and lectured at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Melbourne, and over 100 schools internationally. He has published five books and more than 30 research articles, and his work has been featured in numerous popular publications, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Economist, and ABC’s Catalyst. He currently serves as Director of The Science of Learning Group, a team dedicated to bringing the latest brain and behavioural research to teachers, students, and parents.

Principal Stuart Meade said, “This is the third year of our Flinders Speaker Series, which is designed to bring school, home and the community together to learn and share strategies on important issues so that we may more confidently support the emotional and physical wellbeing of our children and young people".

The Flinders Speaker Series is sponsored by the Flinders P&F.

Parents and staff from the College are invited, along with parents from the local Sunshine Coast community.
