Parents Invited to Flinders Speaker Series with Lael Stone on 21 May

THE FLINDERS SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTS ‘How to raise teens to be amazing humans’ with Lael Stone

Parents who helped drive Lael Stone’s TEDx talk up to three million views (and counting…) will be excited to learn that Lael is presenting at Matthew Flinders Anglican College from 6:30pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, 21 May as part of the Flinders Speaker Series.

Lael is a highly respected educator, author, mother and parenting counsellor who has been working with families for more than 20 years and presenting across the globe.

The Flinders Speaker Series is a free event open to all parents and carers of children in primary and secondary schooling across the Sunshine Coast.

Supported by the Flinders P&F, the events aim to bring schools, families and the community together to learn strategies to support young people’s health, wellbeing and academic growth.

Bookings are essential at

College Principal Ms Michelle Carroll said Lael’s presentation would explore how to raise resilient and compassionate children through connection.

“We know that parents want to positively navigate the teen years and better understand what’s unfolding for children in this modern age,” Ms Carroll said.

“Research reveals that some of the top protective factors to help our tweens and teens thrive is to have meaningful participation in school life and involvement in co-curricular activities, as well as family cohesion.

“So it’s important that we learn effective strategies to support young people at each age and stage of their growth.”

Topics to be explored in the presentation include:
  • Changes in dynamics with puberty and growth
  • Managing technology
  • What conversations to have around puberty and sex
  • Alternatives to threats and punishments
  • Coping with resistant, defiant or aggressive behaviour
  • Exploring triggers as a parent
  • Getting clear on what you want as a parent, and what’s stopping you

Lael is a frequent guest on the wildly successful ‘The Imperfects’ podcast and has also teamed up with the award-winning wellbeing program, The Resilience Project, which was launched at Flinders this year as part of the College’s wellbeing curriculum for students in the Secondary School.

Flinders P&F President Mrs Caroline Edwards said she was excited the event would provide more parents with valuable tools to help young people step into adulthood with confidence.

SAVE THE DATE: Parents are also invited to save the date for our second Flinders Speaker Series event in 2024 on Thursday, 1 August with Michelle Mitchell, an award-winning speaker and bestselling parenting author who is sought after for her compassionate and grounded advice for parenting tweens and teens.
