Year 8 IDEAS 4: Food for Thought

Explore how design and innovation can drive sustainable solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainability Goal: Responsible Consumption and Production. Tackle real-world challenges focusing on transforming new products for the food industry. 

Create exciting food products, eye-catching packaging and branding, apply plant dye to a kite which you construct and fly, and take on a real-world challenge to turn excess food into sustainable solutions. Pitch your ideas and solutions to showcase your designs.

In this unit, students are guided by the provocation: 

  • How might we transform food into new, innovative products?
Unit 1: Food for Thought

Students will apply the full design process, researching, brainstorming, prototyping, and refining, to deliver practical solutions that make a real impact.

  • Practice prototyping skills to make a range of products through food formulations
  • Research, collaboration and design thinking
  • Communicate ideas to develop an innovative solution and confidently pitch to a stakeholder
  • Innovate and evaluate solutions that promote sustainability for food product development

Assessment is a multimodal project showcasing solutions.
