FEAP Athlete Profile - Isabella Sammut, Cricket and Netball

Since the Flinders Elite Athlete Program launched in January 2021, there have been many opportunities for our student athletes to learn and grow. Here we share a profile with FEAP athlete, Isabella Sammut.
First, we asked Flinders Elite Athlete Program Director, Ms Laure Nourse to share her views of Isabella's participation in the FEAP.

We are very excited to welcome Isabella to Flinders as a genuine 'all rounder' who plays a number of sports at a high level as well as being very focused on her academic goals. She is a very organised student who has clear goals on what she wants to achieve and an excellent attitude to working hard.

Isabella, please tell us about your sporting achievements.

I’m a part of the Queensland Cricket Youth Academy as well as the U15 Queensland Schoolgirls Cricket team. In 2021 I was named Sportswoman of the Year at my previous school. I also went to two state carnivals for netball, and captained at both. I’m currently in the Women’s First Grade Premier Cricket team, playing for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers, as well as the U16 Gold Sunshine Coast Netball Representative team.

What are your sporting goals for 2022 and beyond?

Like any aspiring athlete, it’s my ultimate goal to represent Australia in one, if not both, of my chosen sports. For 2022, I want to make the U19 Queensland Cricket team and possibly gain a position in the Brisbane Heat squad. I would also like to represent Flinders at the QISSN competition.

What are your academic goals at Flinders?

I aim to achieve strong results in all subjects and to utilise the study facilities Flinders has in order to prepare me for Year 12, where I’m looking to achieve a high ATAR.

What do you enjoy about the FEAP?

The personalised SCSI gym program as well as access to physiotherapy and inspiring guest speakers. I enjoy working alongside fellow up-and-coming elite athletes in different sports and seeing how our training schedules are similar and different.

Who are your role models?

My role model is my mum, Renae Kunst, who represented and captained Australia in several rugby league World Cups. Although our choices of sport are different, growing up and seeing how determined Mum was and how hard she worked to achieve her dream is ultimately what motivated me to want to become an elite athlete.
