Primary Music Makes a Splash this Week at Flinders

Flinders primary concert

Performing is an essential and rewarding part of the music program for our student musicians at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, and this week there were two concert performances hosted on campus.

EDGE Extension Class Perform Special Concert

Students in our Year 8 Music EDGE extension class performed to an enthusiastic audience of children visiting from the neighbouring Flinders Early Learning Centre (FELC).

The EDGE Curriculum Program is for students at Flinders who are keen to develop their musical skills. It is a selective entry course designed to accelerate music students with particular talent and expertise.

The beauty of this offering is that it allows students to progress at a faster rate and to open pathways to Extension Music or additional units in other subjects in their senior years, such as Extension Music in Year 12.

This year's EDGE program involves 22 students in Year 8 and 20 students in Year 9. The curriculum explores activities such as performing, composing and learning about different styles of music.

EDGE students have also formed a class band, encompassing the wide range of instruments the students learn at the College.

The FELC students visited a Year 8 EDGE class to learn about the different instruments. They were also treated to a number of pieces the young musicians are aiming to master this year.

Research tells us that Music ignites all areas of child development and skills, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It also clearly sparks smiles and gets little bodies moving to the beat!

Congratulations to our Year 8 EDGE students for creating such a joyful musical excursion for the FELC students.

Flinders Concert of Primary Music

The annual Flinders Concert was held in the Flinders Performance Centre on 1 June, 2021.

The showcase featured impressive performances by our Primary School music students involved in the Flinders Choir, Vivace Strings, Junior Primary Choir, Flinders Orchestra, Flinders Voices and Flinders Band.

The audience was entertained by some special guests from 'under the sea' who promoted the upcoming Year 6 Musical Production of The Little Mermaid Jr.

Congratulations to all involved in presenting such an entertaining and memorable concert!
