Year 9 French

Subject Description

French is normally studied as a two-semester (full year) elective in Year 9 to ensure that language skills are appropriately developed for those students wishing to study French in senior; however, students may negotiate with the Head of Curriculum to take a single semester. This course comprises four units, each focussing on a distinct aspect of French culture and language. Unit 1 focusses on urban environments and students consider architecture, modes of transport, shopping, eating and cooking, and develop the language skills necessary to navigate life in a French city. In Unit 2, students explore the wonders, delights, delicacies and variety of French cuisine around the world, and recognise the multicultural aspects of global cuisine and how it has touched Australian culture. Students learn the language associated with healthy living, including exercise and nutrition.

In Unit 3, students develop a French vocabulary that allows them to discuss environmental challenges ranging from climate change to waste disposal, and from water contamination to the extinction of endangered species. In the final unit, students learn that ‘money makes the world go around’, developing a vocabulary to allow them to make transactions and discuss finances. As Christmas approaches, students learn language about giving and charity as they reflect on their relationships with family, friends and community. The unit culminates with a gift-giving project.
